Rain Water Collection – Is It Too Large For A Rain Water Barrel
The reason why you’re collecting rainwater is an important thing to know, in trying to determine how much storage capacity you will need. If you’re only looking at collecting enough to water a small flower garden, then the average 50 gallon rainwater barrel will probably do just fine. If on the other hand you’re trying to collect enough water to live independent of any other water source, you’ll either need an awful lot of rain barrels, or you’ll need a different kind of container. Collecting large quantities of water is not a new idea, as we’ve had cisterns and large tanks, and even small lakes and ponds that have been used to collect rainwater. Lately there have been some very unique methods for collecting large volumes of rainwater.
The RainXchange won my vote for originality and uniqueness. Now I’ll be forced to put a video in here because this system is a bit difficult to describe in words. Essentially one digs a large rectangular hole with a very flat level bottom and place milk crate-like boxes in the hole and stack them to form a rectangular space which is wrapped in a waterproof wrapping except for some of the top area. Then the hole is filled back in creating a large storage area and the top is landscaped with some sort of fountain or waterfall. The whole thing is connected to your rainwater runoff system providing a unique rainwater harvesting collection system.
