Which company, if there was multiple companies, was the most popular in making classic surf cars?
I believe these classics were called “woody” or something close to that. I’ve seen the classic car on posters, pictures all over the place, and I’m wondering what it’s called and who made it.
During the early days of auto building, many automobile designs were adapted directly from earlier horse drawn wagons and coaches. It was not unusual to see car bodies with wooden frames with thin sheets of metal laid over the wood. Several manufacturers built ‘estate wagons’ or ‘station wagons’ with complete wooden bodies. American manufacturers Ford, GM and Chrysler carried the tradition into the 1970′s and beyond, but by that time the real wood had been replaced with wooden colored vinyl trim.
When the surfing craze hit America’s west coast in the 50s and 60s and 70s, surfers needed an inexpensive vehicle that was large enough to carry their boards, and maybe was even big enough for a few close friends to sleep in. The old wooden body wagons were there, and were adopted by many surfers as the ideal surfer transportation.
A few of these old ‘woody’ wagons have been rescued and restored and they are still popular with car collectors all over the USA. Some of the most desirable woodys seem to be from the 1930s and 1940s..
