What Are The Best Ways To Wax And Tune Your Ski Or Snowboard?
Hopefully if you are a ski or snowboard enthusiast you have learned the value of caring for your board or skis. Owning a snowboard or skis makes it necessary for you to properly care for your equipment the right way for a safer experience. If you read about it and talk to the right people you will soon discover that you can do much of the work yourself. When you first start out you may want to enlist a professional to help you. The first thing you should do before waxing or any other kind of work on your snowboards or skis is to bring them indoors to get the chill out of them. Ideally, your gear should be close to normal indoor temperature, as this makes it easier to work on. Just for example, if you wax your skis when they’re cold, then what tends to happen is the base will form bubbles. Obviously that only means more work, hassle, and aggravation. Before you start the application of wax, you have to be sure that the wax iron has been set to the right temperature. The iron has to be hot enough to properly melt the wax, but if it’s too hot, the wax can start smoking, which should be avoided.
You should always wax your snowboard base even if it’s a newer model with supposedly higher-tech base material. There are a number of benefits that come with waxing your board base. On top of allowing your more manipulation, your board will last much longer than if you choose not to wax it. The wax will allow for a shielding type of coating for your base. If it is not out of the ordinary for you to ride on artificial snow, then you should be attentive to the fact that there are oils in the artificial snow that will collect on your base. As time progresses, those oils will leach into your board and put an unending sheet of tacky residue on it. A great layer of base wax also defends against little dings and harm that can really hamper the usual operations of your ride.
You always want to be prepared, whether skiing or board riding, for those uncooperative days on the big hills. It’s no fun when this happens, but you can remedy the situation.
We’re talking about keeping a bar of base wax with you for a quickie wax job. Sometimes, you’re on the ice and it’s just peeling the wax right off your ski/board base. Rubbing wax on your base at times like these can quickly remedy the situation. It only makes sense to be prepared. The best type of wax to use is a general purpose type that contains fluorine. Why fluorine? Easy, that’s what makes the wax slick and slippery -like a mouse’s lip. If you don’t want your skis or board sticking to snow, fluorine helps prevent this. It’s a lot more fun that way.
Not everybody is going to take the trouble to wax and tune their equipment, of course. Your equipment has a lot to do with how well you perform in these activities. However, how you maintain your equipment is really up to you. Applying a little wax to your bases is the minimum you should do.
