Are the “secondaries” really the true highlights of a vacation?

Most of the time you go on a vacation, you have your main attraction or goal, for example if you go to Florida you might want to sit on the beach the most, or if you go to Paris you might want to do touristy stuff the most, or if you go on a hiking/skiing/outdoor trip you probably look forward mostly to the physical aspects. However, I’ve been finding recently that it’s the subtleties, such as dining out, relaxing in the hotel or condo after a full day, simply listening to the “authentic” music of the vacation spot, that are the most rewarding experiences. Don’t get me wrong, relaxation in general is a major reason of going on vacation, but just the fact that you’re on vacation alone, even if you’re doing the EXACT same thing as you would be at home, makes it that much more fun. Any thoughts?

I wouldn’t say that they’re the highlights, but they’re definitely an important part of the experience. Last year when we went to Aruba we spent part of a beautiful, sunny afternoon in our hotel room watching a movie. I minded a tiny bit, but then I realized that our trip wasn’t just to enjoy our new surroundings, but to enjoy each other and just unwind. It was great.
