Can I transport drywall sheets on the roof rack of a Jeep Grand Cherokee?
Might have a chance at some free drywall (which I need a whole bunch of), but I need to transport it. Is it going to crack going about 10 miles on local (i.e. sometimes bumpy) roads on the roof rack of my Jeep Grand Cherokee?
Any tips/suggestions on strapping it down to avoid breakage?
I’ve traveled on pothole infested roads without killing drywall, but not dirt roads. The bottom sheet might have some dents, but you are going to put spackle on it anyways. Just put the first sheet on with the back down. If it is going to be really bumpy, then I’d suggest putting a piece of plywood under the first sheet.
As for tying it down, make sure to do it in all three directions. I usually have a length of strap go over the front from side to side, then hook through the rack, go over the stack of drywall to the middle of the front edge, travel down the front, then under the stack, then back the to roof rack. This keeps the stack from sliding off the front. Do the same thing in the back, and you can prevent it from falling off the back. Alternatively you can just choose not to accelerate hard. You can’t always choose not to brake hard though.
Once you get it on, grab the stack of drywall and see if you can rock your jeep back and forth with it without it moving a lot in relation to the Jeep. If you can, then it is secure enough.
When you put it on, have the extra hanging off the front/back of the rack hang more off the back than the front so air doesn’t catch the front edge and try to push it up. In reality if you have more than about threee sheets, you could do 70 mph without it breaking it, but fewer sheets might not work so well if they are too close to the leading edge of the roof..
