What do you prefer in death metal: technicality or pure harshness?
Well, there’s two things in death metal that exist. Technicality and brutality/harshness are both of them….early Death had less technicality and more raw brutal music. But then listen to their later stuff and you’ll hear more jazzy, technical, and talented as opposed to just harsh stuff.
There’s technical bands like Cynic, Gorguts, later Death, and Brain Drill. Then we have more brutal raw stuff like Early Death, Cannibal Corpse, Massacre, Carcass, and more… Which type of DM is more to your liking? What style also got you into DM? For me, the melody got me into death metal. Melodic death metal introduced me into the harsher sounds.

I like both types but my favourite era of DM would be from late 80′s to 93/94 which is mostly harsher stuff.
I got into DM in 1990 just when the scene was exploding so my first albums would have been Altars of Madness (which still to this day the best dm album ever, hands down!), Death – Leprosy, first Deicide, Slowly we Rot, Autopsy, Carcass…. basically anything that was released on Roadracer or Earache. You were guaranteed quality releases.
BQ 1. hmmm…. check out Atrocity’s earlier albums (Hallucinations and Toddesssensucht) and Nocturnus’ The Key. They paved the way for a lot of the technical dm that’s around now as well as Disincarnate – Dreams of the Carrion Kind. For harsher stuff, Pungent Stench – For God your soul….for me your flesh, Morgoth – Cursed, Baphomet – The Dead Shall Inherit and Cancer – Death Shall Rise. Classics!
