Fluorescent Orange Tshirts Place Wellbeing First
The 1960s was a decade of incredible change. Not only did humans walk on the moon but an entire way of thinking was upended. The emergence of a subculture labeled “hippie” made non-traditional clothing and colors desirable, a trend quickly noted by the entertainment and fashion industries. The new colors were bright, flashy and could be used in a variety of applications. One of the more popular uses has been the creation of fluorescent orange t shirts.
The Science
True fluorescence, found in nature, in quite different from garish, bright clothing dyes. It is a phenomenon that occurs in many creatures and substances both on land and under the sea and is generally produced by absorbing and converting non-visible photons into visible displays. The term fluorescence is actually named after fluorite, a natural mineral that glows.
It is a considerable leap from natural fluorescence to psychedelic colors used clothing manufacture. Today’s dyes have been greatly improved in depth of color and function, making many color tones not only bright but also very reflective. Brighteners and other additives increase the amount of light bouncing back to the viewer, making your shirt fun to wear as well as highly visible.
In The Safety Industry
This unintended consequence proved to be fortuitous in the industrial safety industry. The new, easy-to-see colors meant that workers in many jobs now had a new way to cut down on injuries caused by poor visibility. Bright orange is popular for these worker applications but other highly visible colors treated in the same chemical fashion include lime green and even bright yellow.
Greater Awareness
Today, there are truly valid reasons for using these kinds of colors in manufacturing safety garments ranging from the ever-present cotton t-shirt to the dyes used in coloring the clothing worn by heavy equipment operators. Simply wearing these glowing uniforms automatically creates a greater awareness through an amplified visual presence. Untold numbers of accidents have been prevented because of this new safety clothing.
Usefull Elsewhere As Well
Workers in construction or manufacturing are not the only people benefiting from the development of highly visible fluorescent dyes and other materials. While shirts of all types have been given this treatment, some manufacturers combine sturdy space-age fabrics for outdoor recreational use with the same bright colors, creating an extra measure of visibility for hikers, hunters, and other sports enthusiasts.
Fleeces, sweatshirts and even trousers can now be found with the same flashy bright orange colors as t-shirts. But clothing, however, is not the only area where these neon-bright colors are used. From laptop carriers to shopping bags, the same kinds of dyes are used to make these items harder to misplace or even steal. The colors have gone mainstream, and can often be found on company logos.
Basic fluorescent orange tshirts sold for safety must meet certain standards and the sleeveless look is usually not allowed. The safety t shirts must be made of durable cotton, which is easily worn in all kinds of weather. Some makers add reflective bands for enhanced visibility at night. From their humble beginnings as psychedelic icons, they have finally become not only useful but also respectable.
