Is Your Clunker Worth Saving?
Benefits of the Repairs
Due to the current recession, consumers are holding out on buying or trading in their cars, because they are afraid of getting into more debt. Less people are buying new cars today and instead, are getting their old ones fixed. If you have a later model car with low miles, this is a good idea. There comes a time when it is not feasible to keep your car running. You should buy a different one, whether it is used or new. Let your old beater die if it needs to.
Signs You Should Let Go
When do you let go of your old clunker? This may depend on the car and the owner, but here are some basic signs that you should let go now. If you are stranded somewhere at least three times, this becomes the first sign. When you have to call a cab home because it refuses to start, this is what this means. This car should go if this happens at least three times.
The second of these signs is when part of your muffler comes off when driving. This is not a good sign. There was a gas station that I stopped at once while on a trip with a different trip. “Honk if parts fall off” was on a bumper sticker they were selling inside the gas station. If this sounds way too close to home, let the car die in peace.
Let go of your clunker if you are adding oil every day. This may be indicative that your car is either burning too much oil or is leaking it out. You should really think about getting rid of it either way.
As you are driving down the highway and the tire comes off, this should be the last sign to get rid of it. You may want to hope there is snow available if a fire breaks out because of this. This means that either the bolts were too loose, or the rod broke off. There is no way this can be fixed if the latter happened.
Think About What to Buy
So, you have decided that you need to buy a different car and let your old clunker die. As you will end up paying for more costly repairs on the old clunker, this is a good choice. This is no reason to buy a new car though. Many dealerships have a wide selection of decent, late model used cars to choose from. A used vehicle can save you at least half the cost of a new car. While a new car would be nice, it is not economical, and it will waste more money in the long term. If you have the resources, you can buy a year old car for a little less than half of a new car. You will still be able to get a warranty of some sort, and have little problems for the first few years.
The Final Point
Whether or not you choose to get rid of your clunker, or keep it going with many expensive repairs, the point is to do what is best for you. If you know how to keep a car going for a long time, then do so. Buying a different car may be a better idea if you cannot fix the old one. Limp the old car along until you can buy another car outright. Good luck, and oh, make sure your cell phone is programmed with the taxi company!
