To Lose Weight, Take Care Of The Psychology Of Effective Weight Management.
Losing weight is theoretically simple. If you follow some simple guidelines you can easily lose a pound a day . You need to eat less than you use daily. Or need to control your appetite and eat less of what made you overweight in the first place. How and what you should eat is easy to understand. The essentials of a good diet can be summarised on one page. Doing it is another matter. The obstacles in maintaining a diet are many. They are buried in our habits and belief systems. One of the problems with diets is that they tell you what you cannot eat. This raises two major issues. Just by mentioning what we cannot do bring, them to mind. Nobody likes being told what to do and what not to do, especially if it is something as innocent as snacking on a piece of candy or going for that second portion.
Many people with weight problems have also developed a number of issues with food, often to the extent of an obsession, whether it is a preoccupation with certain favourite foods or an aversion for some foods or in the case of anorexia, with eating altogether. Their relationship with food has strayed from being casual. People who want to change their weight have mostly tried weight management before and failed. Every time this happens it strengthens a belief they just reinforce their views that it is difficult to achieve or even impossible. Without a belief that it can be done, such people are setup for another failure before they even start and give up at the first temptation.
A psychological support system to help people implement a diet plan is an essential part of weight management. Such a program should help the client deal with:
- What we believe deep inside whether true or not and our beliefs about food in general.
- Sustained Motivation. Motivation is easily lost if the benefits are not compelling and uppermost in the mind of the individual. It needs to be maintained at a high level if it is going to work.
- Habits. Habits are things we do routinely mostly without giving it any thought. Changing any habit requires specific focus on our mental pathways to change automatic routines.
- Beliefs in their ability to achieve their goals.
- Underlying fears. People don’t talk about all their fears. Some underlying fears might include a serious fear of hunger |going without} or lack of energy or of not being satisfied.
