My mechanic said my idler arm was loose,how long?.?
before it will break and will there be any significant warning signs, and do they break often while driving becuase he said tie rods dont break while the car is moving so I was wondering if this is the same case
I own a shop, and can tell you this; It’s probably not going to fall apart in the road, but if you have any shimmy, or the vehicle darts around in the road, then you just might want to have something done. Generally when the idler arm goes bad the vehicle is harder than normal to control as it wants to move around on the road, and/or takes extra steering to keep it under control. How to tell if its bad is do this: With the front wheels on the ground, or some ramps to where you can see underneath it, have a buddy move the play in the steering wheel while you watch the idler arm. If it moves up & down then it should be replaced. It is designed to move with the steering, and if it moves up & down this is just extra work required to control the vehicle on the road. There is a very little built in play in these, and when they are greased, there should be NO movement up & down. If your mechanic says you need one, then why not have it done soon? One thing I will bet on is this: If he said it needs it, and you have it done, you should really feel the difference in the way it steers. I have seen tie rods fall completely off before. One of the front wheels will turn (on its own) to one side an slide the vehicle down the road. Not a pretty sight! They can in fact get so loose they will fall apart. I hope I’m not on the road if this happens to you. I wouldn’t take any chances with my steering. If it needs work, then have it done right away. You can always go for a second opinion on the parts it needs. Most mechanics are not out to take advantage of you, and this rings especially true if you are a regular customer. I know we try to take special care of our regulars, as they are our living when it comes to making money, so we would never take a chance on loosing a good customer just to make a few extra bucks. We don’t believe in biting the hand that feeds us, and I would think this is true with your regular mechanic too.
