All You Need To Know About The Weimaraner Breed
The dogs of the Weimaraner breed were firstly raised in the 19th century. The breed is named after the Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach, Karl August, who had its court established in the city of Weimar in Germany. Originally this breed was bred for hunting and was usually owned by royalty who would hunt boars, bears and deer with their dogs. After the decline registered in the popularity of hunting for large pray, the Weimaraner dogs have been used for hunting smaller animals, such are the rabbits, fowls and foxes. Not only they hunt but they are also able of killing prays of any size.
The history of the weimaraner is not that clear. It is presumed that these dogs were bred following standards that have been developed at the end of the 18th century, but the existence of dogs having similar features can be traced back to the 13th century. There is a theory that the ancestor of the breed is actually the St. Hubert Hound which is now known as the Bloodhound or Sleuth Hound. The dogs of this breed were specially raised to have a noble look and to be a reliable companion of their hunting master. Elegant and athletic this is a breed that most people find are attractive and pleasing to look at.
The traditional docking of the tail is considered by the American Kennel Club as a standard of the breed. Although this is still fairly uncommon, this breed is beginning to appear with its whole tail still intact because, in many countries, tail docking is illegal now. Also known as the Grey Ghost the Weimaraner’s eyes are one of their distinctive features and can be light amber, grey or blue-grey in color. When it comes to being social with strangers this breed is not quite so much so as other hunting dogs are known to be.
Weimaraners are more protective of their owners and are known to be protective over their turf, making them rather territorial. They don’t act so friendly with strangers, but they also don’t tend to be aggressive, if properly socialized while they were still puppies. When you are seeing that a weimaraner‘s hair stands up on its back and its tail stands erect, keep your distance because it shows you it’s not too happy to see you. When it comes to intelligence this dog ranks among the top breeds and they display great sensitivity.
These dogs have also earned the reputation of having a human brain, as they also possess an uncanny ability when it comes to problem solving. These dogs work excellently and show intelligent obedience to their master’s orders, when they are present in contests or canine shows.
At times, these dogs can be somewhat stubborn, but they are a loyal breed that will never leave their master’s side. Due to the fact that these dogs are capable of bonding so closely with their owner that they will remain near to him all the time if given the smallest chance, they are also called by some as the “Velcro Dogs”. The dogs of the Weimaraner breed are very affectionate and love showing toward their owners and they need a lot of attention from them, and if the owner didn’t properly trained them while puppies, they will find it somewhat tricky trying to get them to sleep in their own beds.
