1977 ski-doo: runs great then dies?
1977 ski-doo olympique 340:
I drained the fuel tank, and cleaned out the carburetor (which didn’t seem dirty), and it ran perfectly for around 20 minutes (lots of power, good idle).
Then it totally dies, and will only run for short bursts with help of primer. It isn’t flooding, as the plugs are dry–so something is keeping it from getting gas.
I am going to clean out the carb jets again, but I’m suspicious there is another cause. The fuel pump worked when I checked it (it’s vacuum powered), could it just be weak?
Note; this has only happened when the engine is fully warm, and some moisture did get under the hood. There were some open wires to the main switch that I sealed withe electrician’s tape.. yet it seems that insufficient gas through the carb is the main issue.
Previous owner replaced all new fuel lines and vacuum line (there is only one vac line, and it is to the fuel pump).
Check all the fuel lines for being collapesed, pinched,cracked from age.Check the vacume line to the fuel pump is in good shape.Once runnning, check the fuel lines from the pump to the carb for bubbles of air.The old hard fuel lines will suck air at the fittings.Be smart and replace all the old fuel and vac line to the pump.Something stopped the fuel.check for water/ice in the system or carb.
