Reasons Why Cats Lose Their Hair
Cats, as adorable as they are, are constantly shedding fur. However, health issues can sometimes lead to abnormal amounts of hair loss. This type of hair loss is known as alopecia and can mean that your cat is suffering from a major health problem. Whether he’s balding in spots or all over his body, there is cause for concern. Pruritic and non-pruritic are the two main categories of feline hair loss. Itchy skin is a symptom of pruritic hair loss, so cats often start biting, chewing, and licking themselves. Cats with non-pruritic hair loss often don’t have itchy skin, but the affected area can be painful.
Pruritic hair loss is usually caused by allergic reactions. Humans and felines can both suffer allergic reactions. Cats that are bitten by an insect or flea may develop dermatitis and start biting and scratching themselves more than usual. See your vet if this occurs, because he may want you to give your cat medication on a systematic basis that will keep fleas and bugs from biting him and starting colonies in his fur. Switching brands of food may cause an allergic reaction. Your cat may also have one because of pollen, dust, or other irritants.
Ringworm is a fungus which can affect felines. Cats frequently lose their hair if a case of ringworm isn’t caught early enough. Ringworm is a condition that usually causes circular lesions. Your vet will need to give your cat anti-fungal cream to help get rid of ringworm. If you don’t treat it at all, it will take about 3 months to heal and then another 3 months for the hair to grow back.
Your cat can also lose its hair due to stress, injury, or conditions like Cushing’s disease and hyperthyroidism. Some cats are prone to feline symmetrical alopecia because of their hormones. This may become a problem after neutering or spaying. It usually can be treated with hormone injections. It’s important not to try to treat the condition on your own if you don’t truly know what’s causing the hair loss. A vet would be better suited to treat the condition. Doc No.kslhwde-sdtlgh
