Chroma Key, Blue And Green Screen
The magic of film has become a reality because of green screen studio and software technologies. Technically, green and blue screens are referred to as chroma key, color-keying, or colour separation overlay. Whatever you may prefer calling it, the main concept behind this technique is the backround, which is normally green or blue screen, is to be extracted and replaced with a different image or frame.
As they say, necessity will breed invention. It goes on saying that the origin of chroma key was born by the yearning to have control and convenience of shooting on the stage. Chroma key helps nulls the requirement to find the perfect location. Location filming ranging from the very difficult, like, the at the edge of a cliff, to the impossible, like flying in the air, established chroma keying every filmmaker and motion graphic supervisor’s best friend.
This process starts with a foreground, which is the subject being shot, and the background, whichi is our blue or green screen. Some people may be asking why is that from all colors are blue and green always used in the films. The answer is that most subjects are people, and that human skin color have very little if any blue or green pigment. The main difference between DOPs choosing blue versus green is primarily preference. Commonly, analog TV broadcasting use blue screen. Blue is preferable when videos that need to be darker like night-time scene. In addition, when filming with something that will be chroma keyed on water, typically blue would tend to work very well. For talent with blonde hair, blue screen may give an easier key.
Either green or blue can work reasonably well in todays VFX environment and the choice for which background color is one’s own familiarity and is simply choosing a background that will contrast from the subject, there are some issues to be decided that will end up leading to leaning towards one from the other. Since blue occurs more on typical apparel designs like models’ pants or even their eyes, green screen studios often tend to be the ideal choice. Furthermore, green screen requires less light therefore making it a better choice for outdoor shoots. Green has became the favorite in the production world because of digital photography cameras retain more detail in the green colored channel. In the camera, green channels are said to possess lesser noise. Our vision is also more sensitive and responsive to the green spectrum with the regards to judging brightness. Green screen has higher luminance value compared to blue. Luminance refers to the encoded black and white info including sharpness, contrast, and brightness within a frame.
The recent switch from blue to green screen largely demonstrates the switch from film to digital. Over the past decade, the usage of green screen sets has become the more dominant in video special effects. Multi-million dollar 3D blockbusters like Avatar, Alice in Wonderland, Jurassic Park, and many others incorporated use of green screen in their special effects. It may be a little awkward at first for the talent, with experienced special effects crews minds and the advent of chromakey technology, your next film will surely be a hit.
