Practice instrument approach question?
Say you are doing a practice ILS approach under VFR and ATC gives you radar vectors to the final approach course, and tells you to contact the control tower at the FAF. You want to ultimately land at the airport at which you are doing the approach. If the the active runway at the airport is in the opposite direction of the ILS that you are flying, what is the typical procedure for the practice approach? Remeber, this is all being conducted under VFR.
A – fly the approach to published circling minimums and circle to the active runway
B – cut off the approach at VFR pattern altitude and join the pattern
C – ask tower if you can land straight in on the ILS’s runway (if the wind is light and variable)
D – fly the published missed approach and then rejoin the pattern as normal VFR traffic
E – something else??
I’ve done this a few times and rarely ever have a problem with it.
If its an approach into an uncontrolled airport then just watch for traffic and fly the approach to the circling minimum, and circle around to land. Just that simple.
At a controlled airport traffic will dictate your clearance. If the airspace is busy you probably won’t get a full approach. You may be able to fly a dme arc but don’t expect any inbound portion with a straight in approach to a non active runway. If the airspace isn’t too busy, or the controllers are able and willing to help you out they may allow you to make a full approach down to circling minimums and circle around for a landing. It is at their discretion. You can always ask for a straight in landing with unfavorable winds. Odds are they will tell you no if there is any traffic what so ever, but if you want to try it then go ahead and ask.
Basically, if its a controlled field you do what the controllers will allow you to do. At an uncontrolled field you do what ever you think is safe to do.
